This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

This book is cheaply bound and looks as if it was photo copied. Inside is a stamp that says property of New York Public Library. The paper is like photo-copy paper and not book paper. I'm guessing someone made copies of the poem and self-published it. How despicable.Product details

Evangeline Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Arthur Lincoln 1859 [from old catalog] Hamilton Books Reviews
A very interesting idea, to write the continuation of the poem. Historical fiction at it's best.
I have no recent memory of any author who was able to link each word together and combine natural description of each scene to create a fluid complexity of words they allowed the reader to connect to the story. The imagery really captured the time period and raw beauty of the experience for me and allowed me to connect so deeply with the characters themselves. I look forward to any future novel by Mr. Farmer...
Evangeline by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is one of the great poems ever written. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is perhaps America's best-loved poet. I would definitely recommend this book.
This was purchased for a friend who does normally purchase items online. She was thrilled with the volume and even more thrilled with a most fair price for such a beautifully bound copy.
I read Evangeline and LOVED it! So I looked for an edition that was small and good for travel. This edition is FANTASTIC! It's the Perfect size and even has some extra features (like a map and introduction!)! The seller said it was used, but it looks almost brand new!!! I am inexplicably happy with my purchase! Evangeline (English)
I love this particular edition because of the "Notes and Study Plan" in the back of the book. It helped with references which I didn't fully understand on first reading Evangeline many years ago. Especially good edition for those interested or researching Acadian history!
Inexplicably, this Hard Press edition does not start off the tale of Evangeline with the classic opening 19 lines of Longfellow's introduction -- a baffling lapse, because these lines are probably the most famous in this historically based love story "This is the forest primeval. The murmuring pines and the hemlocks/ Bearded with moss, and in garments green, indistinct in the twilight, Stand like Druids of old..." (lines 1-3) etc. This opening sets the scene, and is critical because Longfellow comes full circle to this image at the end of the poem (line 1390) "Still stands the forest primeval; but under the shade of its branches stand another race, with other customs and language", etc.
I took a chance on this edition because I expected there to be a critical preface in the volume, but this edition is simply the poem itself (well, most of it) and nothing else; no introductions ... no critical insights ... no historical subtext ... no literary review ... no numbering of lines.
So four stars to Longfellow for his brave experiment in Homeric hexameter, which I believe sounds better to the ear of a reader today than it did to the public in Longfellow's time, who preferred the familiar iambic pentameter. Four stars to Longfellow, one star to Hard Press for the weird omission of the opening lines of the poem.
This book is cheaply bound and looks as if it was photo copied. Inside is a stamp that says property of New York Public Library. The paper is like photo-copy paper and not book paper. I'm guessing someone made copies of the poem and self-published it. How despicable.
